I painted these custom spikes for Brian Wilson of the San Francisco Giants to wear in the 2011 All Star Game in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday!
Brian "Fear the Beard" Wilson reminds me a lot of another of my favorite San Francisco superstars, Terrell Owens. He takes fines for his eccentric actions, but he has too much swag to stop. I wanted to include a reference toward his hilarious "Machine" obsession and the phone that accompanies it, but couldn't find a way to make them fit.
There are two portraits of the closer, one of which was provided to me, but which I was advised to "make the beard more gnarly."
On the toes are blended in his logo and a stamp reading, "Ninja Certified."
The inside heel reads "too much awesome," which is a reference to the LAST All Star Game "custom" shoes he wore, for which he was fined for having too much awesome on his feet, as he put it.
The spikes I was given bear a feature which allows for interchangeable Nike swooshes to match the team color. I cut my own, spray painted them a brighter shade of orange than Nike provided, and colored them in with a marker, much as the Beard is known to do on his own flashy shoes. I then painted the terms "fear the beard" and "fine the spikes" on them, which will only be discovered in close-ups. We will see if he has the gall to wear them in the national spotlight... haha
